A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The Sweetness Of Water Under The Guidance Of Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation Theory

This is a translation practice report of the fiction The Sweetness of Water.Set in the twilight of the Civil War,this book depicts a story between two brothers Landry and Prentiss,freed from the Emancipation,and the white Walker family.It touches upon themes of the race,racism,power and love in depth.Through reading,readers can feel the multifaceted nature of human,as well as love,which can convulse their hearts heavily.Guided by Newmark’s semantic translation theory,the translator mainly explores the Chinese translation of chapter one to four of The Sweetness of Water.Meanwhile,the translator analyzes the application and effect of semantic translation theory in process of translation from three major perspectives of vocabulary,syntax and rhetoric.This report is divided into five chapters.In the first chapter,the translator describes the translation project,which includes introduction to the author,analysis of the source text,and significance of the project.The second chapter includes an account of the translation process,mainly involving three major processes:pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter three mainly illustrates the theoretical basis of this project,which contains the introduction to Peter Newmark’s translation theory,the comparison between communicative translation and semantic translation theory,and the application of semantic translation theory in this translation material.In terms of chapter four “Case Analysis”,the translator analyzes the specific examples encountered in the translation under the semantic translation theory.At last,in chapter five,the translator summarizes several findings and limitations in translation.
