Hamlin Garland is the famous native writer of America in the end of 19 th century and in the beginning of 20 th century.As a novelist in the transition period of American Literature development,his special realism not only reflected the tradition of realism,but also the violent tendency of naturalism.His short stories had obvious local color,depicted the nature disaster,unfair social system,backward thinking and relatives' painful life which western immigrants suffered in the westward movement,reflected the miserable world which they suffered and the extreme contribution,sacrifice spirits and growing process of the young generation in characters,talent and morality.He depicted a lot of violent conflict between human and nature,human and social system,human and human,revealed the western farmers' abyss of bitterness and rebellious spirit when they fight against the violence.His short stories not only reflected the criticize violence and humanitarianism in realism,but also the broken American dream and the American national spirit.This article aimed to explore the origin and significance of violence in Garland's novel,Simultaneously,with the hope of regarding it as a future reference,and for a better reflection of the urban-rural modernization in China now.
