A Study On The Cultural Of Thai Garland

Thai garland has a long history,which has become popular since Sukhothai period.It gradually develops to be folk arts and crafts and special decoration in people's lives.It has a wide range of practicality and decorativeness and is endowed profound meaning and connotation.As a kind of unique handicraft of Thailand,the Thai garland not only has distinct artistic charm,but also has strong practicality.It is a commodity and an epitome of Thai folk culture as well.Thai garland is a perfect combination of practicality,aesthetics and craftsmanship,which creates the cultural and aesthetic value of it.Adopting the theory and approach of cultural studies,this thesis tries to interpret the cultural function that Thai garland bearing,so as to further clarify the charming of Thai garland culture and get a profound and direct understanding of Thai culture.This thesis includes six parts: Introduction,it introduces the source of this thesis,the domestic studies and studies in Thailand,purpose and significance of the study,Chapter One,the Historical Development of Thai Garland,introduces the development and change of Thai Garland and the commonly used flower types,the selection,preservation of flowers,the structure and making steps of garland.Chapter Two is Thai Flowers.In this part,the garland will be classified according to the artistic style,shaping feature and usage.This part also makes a comprehensive analysis of the type and classification of garland.Chapter Three is Connotation of Thai Flowers.From the multi-perspectives of Thai literature,custom,religion and daily life,it thoroughly introduces Thai garland and its related Thai traditional culture.Chapter Four is the Cultural Function of Thai Garland.This part deeply explores the cultural function contained in Thai garland.Thai people have a deep feeling towards garlands.Garlands express Thai people's aesthetic for nature,the love for life.The garland symbolizing good fortune spontaneously and closely connects with Thai people's daily life,festival and important events and also becomes the most charming part of traditional Thai culture.The last part is Conclusion,which summarizes the main points of this thesis.This thesis presents the historical development of Thai garland,describes the category and cultural connotation of Thai garland and extracts some social and cultural implication of the related garland in Thai language.It summarizes and analyzes the cultural function of Thai garland through the study of floral culture,story,garland and custom.
