Senior English Curriculum Standard(Experimental Manuscript)has stated that the ultimate goal of English teaching is to foster students' comprehensive abilities to use English language,which include listening,speaking,reading and writing.Among them,as an output activity,writing has become more and more important.Students' other language skills can benefit a lot from the improvement of students' writing skills.Therefore,in order to meet the high standards for senior English writing,teachers are supposed to make an investigation into the problems existing in English writing class and then find out certain counter-measures.The traditional high school English writing teaching approach is always teacher-centered,which leads to the lack of communication between the teacher and the students.So the students can't get the teacher's effective guidance during the whole process of learning.On the basis of studying the related teaching theories and approaches,the author found that constructivism can play a very important guiding role in English writing teaching of senior high schools.The aim of this research is to find out if the English writing teaching approach based on the constructivism can have an active effect on the senior high school students' writing performance and help them change their negative attitudes towards English writing and form a good writing habit.During the process of research,a questionnaire was conducted before the experiment to learn more about the students' English writing status;then 16-week teaching experiment was carried out;after the experiment,students received a questionnaire survey about their attitudes and changes towards English writing.Two classes of 120 students from Lanzhou No.51 High School participated in the research,who were divided into two classes,the experimental class and the controlled class.The students were all given two tests,the pre-test and the post-test.Through the results of the questionnaires and the writing scores that the students got in the pre-test and the post-test,the author has investigated the changes of the students' attitudes towards English writing and their writing habits before and after the experiment.By the empirical experiment and through analysis and discussion,the main conclusions are drawn as follows:The English writing teaching approach based on the constructivism(1)can make students realize the importance of cooperation and learn how to communicate with their classmates and teachers.(2)can help students form a good habit of writing in English.(3)can effectively improve students' English writing scores.(4)can help students improve their English writing performance.Although the research has got many positive results,there are still several limitations: this comparative experiment only lasted about 16 weeks so there might be some elements which couldn't be controlled very well;the study was in the small sample size;during the process of discussion in the writing class,there are some problems.So this research is just an empirical study and it needs further study.
