The translation material adopted by the report is They say / I say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing, written by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein. In the process of the translation, the author finds that a lot of parentheses are used in the book, and improper handling of them adversely affects the quality of the original translation, and a relatively ideal translation is only the result of multiple revisions. This report intends to summarize the problems encountered by the author in translating the book, analyze the causes of the problems, and explore the techniques and specific methods for solving such problems. This report aims to find ways to achieve translations which conform to the expressional habits of Chinese, and which are natural in style and as faithful to the original text as possible. This report hopes to provide some reference for the translation of parentheses in the future. This report consists of five parts: The first chapter is an overview of the report, including the introduction of the translation task, the significance of the topic and the structure of the report. The second chapter introduces the process of translation practice in detail. The third chapter discusses the definition, characteristics and functions of parentheses, and analyzes the factors that affect the translation of parentheses from English to Chinese. In the fourth chapter, through the analysis of specific cases, the methods that can be used in the translation of English parentheses are proposed: sentence-initial method, bracket method, preposition method and reorganization method. The fifth chapter summarizes the translation practice.
