With the deepening of globalization and the development of Chinese economy,China plays an ever bigger role on the world stage; and since the reform and openingup, China and other countries are increasingly interdependent and what hashappened in other countries are more and more affecting people in China. Therefore, people in China are eager to know what is happening around the world. In order tomeet Chinese people’s needs, more and more English news, in which language mostworld news are reported, are translated into Chinese.A good translation of English news should not only be faithful to the originaltext, but also be readable to target readers. However, there are many obscure orunidiomatic expressions in the English news translation that significantly influencethe transferring of the original meaning. The author of this thesis intends to explore news E-C translation from theperspective of structural contrast between the two languages. This thesis comprises six chapters. The first chapter points out the major problem of E-C news translation, and onthe basis of this, the author proposes to analyze E-C news translation from theperspective of structural contrast between the two languages. The second chapter gives a general view of English news, with a summary offeatures of the English news and the importance of getting translation accurate andappropriate. The third chapter is the theoretical framework of this thesis, giving anintroduction to TG grammar and deep structure and surface structure in particular.Guided by this theoretical framework, the author suggests applying deep structureand surface structure to the structural analysis in E-C news translation on the basis ofcontrastive study of English and Chinese structures. The fourth chapter is the literature review. The author gives a brief introductionto the contrastive study at home and abroad, and points out major differencesbetween those and this thesis, that is, this thesis deals with contrastive study betweenEnglish and Chinese structures in particular, instead of semantic or other contrasts. The fifth chapter details the structural features in both English and Chinese atlexical, syntactical and discourse level respectively, so that the translator cancorrectly grasp and re-express the meaning of the original. The sixth chapter is the core of this thesis. It illustrates in detail how to deal withE-C news translation from the perspective of structural contrast. Many translationtechniques have been elaborated with examples, which are analyzed in this way: toread through the surface structure to the deep structure in the source text, based onthe structural analysis of the source language; to transfer the meaning from the deepstructure of sentences in the source text to the deep structure of sentences in thetarget text; and to transfer the deep structure of the sentences in the target text to thesurface structure in the target language, based on the rules of the target language.Through this study, it is found that structural contrast can be a good way to dealwith E-C news translation. It can help the translator overcome the difficulties causedby different structures and read through the surface structure of the source text togain a correct meaning of the original, and then transfer the meaning of the originalappropriately in the target language according to the rules of the target language.
