The environment of Chinese painting in the 21st century has a tendency of diversification,globalization and idealization.With western culture pouring in,Chinese painting studying faces new challenges and opportunities.At the same time,the shift between retro and revolution has become the theme of the times.As a Chinese painting learner,how to understand Chinese painting,guard our cultural heritage and comb through painting history play a key role in providing profound help in our own painting practices and understanding ancient painters properly as well as improving ourselves.Yun Shou-ping described his art concepts and humanistic spirit through his postscript of painting,showing us how the ancient artists faced the profound spiritual connotation of traditional Chinese culture.By searching information on relevant studies on Yun Shou-ping,the author found that most studies stayed on painting techniques and the aesthetic level,and there were few expressions of painting ideas and innovative concepts.In this paper,the author studied painting ideas in The South Tian Painting Postscript and saw clearly the reasons behind the appearance of an artist's painting and the maturation of a painting technique.Each era has its own developmental limitations,as well as its opportunities and innovations born within.Yun Shou-ping witnessed the social turmoil,absorbed the rich connotation and profound accumulation from the previous dynasty,noticed the extension of "boneless painting" with his acute perception and possessed a clear understanding of the shortcomings of paintings in late Ming dynasty and early Qing dynasty.He combined concepts and practices to finally washed gold out of sands.What an innovation under the social background of the time! As a dweller of the Ming Dynasty,Yun Shou-ping resolutely adhered to his political stand and would not serve the Qing Dynasty.He consoled himself with poetry,calligraphy and paintings.In his later career,he stood against the decadence of copying ancient works by guarding and interpreting old artistic conceptions.He believed artists should learn from the ancient but not copying them and learn their spirits through their paintings,study ancestor's techniques and feel their experiences.He created a new boneless painting with his own interpretations through absorbing the previous and looking forward to the prospect,played a model role in the key transformation of our traditional culture.Yun Shou-ping's "borrowing from the ancient" art career is a practical instruction to the present and future Chinese painting.
