A Reprot On The Translation Of Climate Changes:Their Nature And Cause (Chapter 7-9)

This is a translation report on the excerpts from the 7th to 9th chapters of Climate Changes: Their Nature and Causes written by a professor of Yale University named Ellsworth Huntington and a geographical expert named Stephen Sargent Visher.Chapter 7 illustrates the whole glacial period,which includes the reasons of the appearance and disappearance of glaciation and the process of glaciation,chapter 8 discusses the problems of glacial periods such as the location of glaciation,the sudden coming of glaciation,peculiar variations in the height of the snow line and of glaciation,lakes and other evidences of humidity in unglaciated regions and glaciation at sea level and in low latitudes in the Permian and Proterozoic eras.In the end,chapter 9 narrates the origin of loess.As a highly professional science book,there are numerous professional words relating to geography and climate,such as Permain and Proterozoic.The sentences of scientific books are logical and objective.Non-subject sentences and specific sentence structure are often used in scientific books,like “It's...that...” and passive sentences.At the textual level,the coherence between upper and lower sentences and upper and lower paragraphs is especially important.When dealing with some connective and transitional words,the author should take the context into consideration and choose the most suitable meaning.In view of the linguistic features of source text,this paper gives a brief overview in terms of the semantic translation and communicative translation.Combining with the raw materials,the author analyzes semantic translation and communicative translation used in the translation practice from the aspects of professional vocabulary,phrases,vocabulary,long sentences and context.When translating professional vocabularies and names,the author adopted the method of adding footnotes.In this way,readers can know the knowledge point they are interested in.When translating sentences,it is necessary to consider the accuracy of the sentences meaning and whether the context is consistent.Adopting the method of substitution and omission when necessary can reduce the translation cavity,can also retain the information in the original text to the maximum degree.The combination of semantic translation and communicative translation can achieve a satisfactory translation.Through this translation practice,the author learned a lot of knowledge of geography and climate change by collecting information step by step.From a professional perspective,the author sees a lot of inadequacies of her own.Translators should have to be professional and have a wide range of knowledge.
