| Sports play an important role in Chinese people’s daily life.As a channel to gain sports news information,the quality of E-C translation of sports news is particularly essential.On account of differences between Chinese and English cultures,it is a hard case to translate the cultural default in English sports news.It is the default that leads to the loss of key points in the translation and cut off the relevance among different cultures,which results in negative influences on Chinese readers’ reading and comprehension.As a consequence,it is of great necessity to analyze the cultural default in the translation of sports news and its compensation strategies.The author seeks to explore the cultural default in the translation of sports news as well as its compensation strategies on the basis of the theories of cultural default and compensation in translation.Owing to discrepancies in traditions,historical backgrounds and religions between Chinese and western cultures,the cultural default in sports news mainly lies in names of professional items,historical backgrounds,typical characteristics of players and teams as well as habitual expressions.Therefore,when dealing with English sports news,the translators usually encounter three problems which are mistranslation,undertranslation and overtranslation impacted by the above-mentioned cultural default.Elements of default have to be compensated during the translation practice so as to achieve successful communication.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory,the author investigates seven compensation approaches in the translation of sports news by applying the methodology of example analysis.They are transliteration,literal translation plus explanatory words,proper amplification,omission,annotation,following the established expression and retaining the cultural flavor of the original texts.In addition,factors influencing the compensation strategies in the translation of sports news are elaborated from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory.When adopting compensation strategies,the translators have to be faithful to original sports news,takes source language readers’ cultural background and target language readers’ comprehensibility and reception into consideration as well.The present research has come to a conclusion that compensation in translation is able to solve the problems in target language readers’ comprehension caused by the cultural default so as to realize the informative function and communicative function of sports news.The translators need to pay attention to the cultural default,own solid cultural accumulation in sports,master and flexibly apply strategies to compensate the cultural default in the translation of sports news.Meanwhile,it is an expectation that this study is able to offer some enlightenments for the further translators of sports news. |
