The Narrative Study Of Rwanda Genocide

There are many scholars study on the "the Rwandan Genocide" respectively from history,law,education,foreign relations and ethics,and other perspectives,but there is few study on it from the perspective of narrative about the narrative works such as the only short story Say You Are One of Them and the four films named Kinyarwanda,Hotel Rwanda,Sometimes in April,and Shooting Dogs.This academic dissertation will,therefore,study the two kinds of texts specific representation of the same event,by searching their contents,structures,methods and effects,and then compare the two media’s similarities and differences,so as to show the differences of the narrative media and narrative genre bring different experience of audience.That is a valuable research.This paper by utilizing the method of semantic criticism and structuralism narrative theories to study the novel of the say you are one of them them short stories and "hotel Rwanda" "sometime in April " all the Rwandan people "to" kill "the four films event about the text,which is formed by the reflection on the two genres in narrative" kill"the incident,by use of different narrative mode,narrative content and narrative effects.There are three parts of the dissertation.The first part is the research on the only novel text around the aspects of narrative subject emotional tendency,text structure,space-time processing and atmosphere of discourse;The Second part is about the narration of the Genocide,analyzing its clever design,content and effect of the four films from the three aspects of characters,time and space.The third part compares the five works from the aspects of effect and finitude,and also compares the two narrative media,the novel and the film.For the reappearance of the original incident of the Genocide,the film is more suitable to tell a series of suspense and "problem solving" actions around two or three central characters.A novel is better suited to describe the seeing,hearing,feeling and reaction(or a small amount of action)of one or two persons of a particular identity(such as the "I" in the only novel).Whether to character,narrative time,or to the narrative space,the narrative of novels and film is to the Genocide itself,is just only the "water drop" to the whole sea.However,they both focus on the key point of the incident: the deliberately identifying of their identity brews the tragedy of the innocent.This dissertation insists that the film makes full use of the camera lens that preference for action and its essential outside view,with montage to complete a series of actions and have a "head-body-tail","jumping" process.Therefore the soul of the film is that "acting with sound to let audience watching and listening".And the soul of the novel is "to follow the limited inspected perspective and to describe knowledge and experience to let reader reading and thinking".Although it has the self-sufficiency plot,its linear,continuity,rather than three-dimensional,jumping process,can make limited narrative context to give the reader more fully thinking time and space.
