Demotivation is an issue, which has been recently the focus of attention in the field of second language learning and teaching. The influence of learners' learning behavior is not only has positive side, but also has negative side, which we call it--demotivation.Demotivation is widespread in the process of learning English for nonEnglish majors in China. However, the number of related studies at home is limited, and the studies on undergraduates in the university take up a very considerable part. There is the absence of investigations into the group of college students who study in colleges.Besides, most of the studies at home focus on the extraction and induction of contributing factors. The study about what is the relationship between factors is absence. For this reason,210 non-English major freshmen in colleges and 8 English teachers are chosen as the research objects. This study tries to explore the demotivation of students and their behaviors in the process of English acquisition, and the contributing factors that lead to learning demotivation. The present research tries to deal with the following two research questions:(1)What are the contributing factors of the demotivation among non-English major's in Chinese colleges?(2)What is the relationship between external and internal factors? How does it lead to the demotivation of the learners?Combined with quantitative and qualitative methods, the quantitative method is used to collect data of questionnaires with descriptive analysis through SPSS 17.0.And the qualitative statistics generalized from interview transcripts and content analysis to provide complementary illustration for the quantitative statistics.By analyzing the data, the present study has made the following findings:(1)The results show that there are six kinds of contributing factors, which lead to the decline in Chinese college students' foreign language learning motivation. They are: Teacher's inadequate competence and lack of adequate teaching materials;Negative attitude to language learning and speaking;Lack of effective learning strategies;Lack of technological facilities in class and unfavorable classroom atmosphere;Lack of self-confidence and insufficient opportunities for speaking practice;Incorrect teaching methods and excessive attention to the teaching content of the exam.Among them,“Negative attitude to language learning and speaking” and “Lack of technological facilities in class and unfavorable classroom climate” are the two main factors.(2)The internal and external factors of the demotivation affect each other, but the external factors have greater influence on the internal factors.External factors will be transformed into internal factors under certain conditions, which lead to the loss of students' interest in learning English.Based on the research,re-motivating strategies are offered to prevent or minimize demotivation from four aspects: students, teachers, curriculum and environment. And it's also try to increase college students' motivation in the end of this study. It is hoped that this study on the investigation of non-English majors' learning demotivation can help college students to improve their learning efficiency. And also help college teachers to improve the efficiency of college English teaching and avoid the demotivation.
