A Contrastive Study And Translation Of Cohesive Devices Of The Chinese And English Texts Of The White Papers Of China's Human Rights

With the deepening of reform and opening up policy,China's economic development is more and more integrated into the process of globalization.However,Western dominated discourse has shown its criticism of China at all aspects.Intense criticism in the political,economic,cultural and legal aspects is quite common.The criticism of China's human rights is too serious to be ignored.Against this backdrop,the author makes a contrastive study of cohesive devices in the Chinese and English texts of white papers of China's human rights,and hopes to safeguard and enhance China's international discourse power in human rights.First,the author built the corpus with Chinese human rights white papers with their English version(10 articles),and marked the texts with Ant Conc based on the classification of cohesive devices of Halliday and Hasan.Then,the author uses MS Excel to carry out the statistical analysis of these data.The major findings are as follows:The Chinese prefer to use lexical cohesion rather than grammatical cohesive devices.Grammatically,the Chinese prefer to use temporal conjunctions while the English prefer to use reference especially personal reference and demonstrative reference.Lexically,the Chinese prefer to use collocation and repetition while the English prefer to use hyponymy.Based on the previous contrastive study,the author has put forward two kinds of translation methods and some useful translation strategies.They are,“literal translation”--remaining of the cohesive devices used in the ST;“translation shifts”--amplification,contraction and conversion of those cohesive devices.The author herself hopes that her efforts in this field can make contributions to improve the translation quality of white papers of human rights,and to enhance our international discourse power in the field of human rights.
