A Report On The Translation Of Chapters Five And Six Of Sociology And Human Rights:A Bill Of Rights For The Twenty-first Century

This translation practice report is based on the translation practice project through which Chapters 5 and 6 of the book,Sociology and Human Rights: the Bill of Rights for the Twenty-first Century,Globalizing the Human Rights Perspective and Cooperating Around Environmental Rights published by the United States in 2012,was translated from English into Chinese.Among them,Chapter 5 mainly discusses human rights in the context of globalization,and Chapter 6 mainly examines environmental right as one of the most important categories of human rights in the contemporary world.These two chapters are typical contemporary academic English,involving a large number of academic terms,featuring a rigorous style,thorough reasoning,and many long and complicated sentences.In the translation process,the author,in view of the great differences between English and Chinese academic texts in vocabulary,grammar and other aspects,mainly relied on Catford’s theory of translation shifts as a guide and used a large number of practical translation examples to analyze the source text from the aspects of level shift,structure shift,class shift and unit shift,to identify feasible translation techniques to tackle the above-mentioned challenges,and to avoid “translationese” resulting from mechanical literal translation.Ultimately,the translation project produced a fluent and authentic Chinese translation of the two chapters that truly and accurately preserves all information in the source text.
