With the development and needs of the times,English textbooks for primary and secondary schools have been undergoing transformation and updating.Since the implementation of The Full-time Compulsory Education General Senior High School English Curriculum Standard in 2011,the development and use of teaching materials have continued.Textbooks are the carrier of the curriculum and are the main curriculum resources according to the curriculum standards.They are the main teaching materials and learning materials for classroom teaching.However,for the same set of PEP teaching materials,teachers with different teaching experience have different methods to deal with the material.Under this background,with 41 experienced and novice English teachers from three senior high schools in Hainan Province as subjects,this thesis investigates their understanding of the curriculum standards;their attitudes and understanding of English teaching materials and the use of them;the actual situation of the use of teaching materials;their problems and hopes in the use of teaching materials.The analysis of the questionnaires,interview and observation shows that: Firstly,the majority experienced teachers but only a little more than half of novice teachers are very familiar with curriculum standard,and more experienced teachers believe that curriculum standards have a great effect on classroom teaching.Secondly,the majority of experienced teachers but only less than half of the novice teachers are familiar with the teaching materials,and experienced teachers hold more active attitude toward the English teaching materials.Thirdly,in the actual use of the teaching materials,most novice teachers basically use them according to the order of the teaching materials,while experienced teachers often handle the teaching materials flexibly by themselves,such as supplementation,replacement and reorganization,and are better at integrating and using the materials creatively,and they are more capable of handling the materials.Fourthly,two kinds of teachers think the major difficulty in using the teaching materials is lack of the support of systematic teaching resources.Novice teachers need to be trained in the teaching materials redevelopment and resource searching,and some experienced teachers need to be trained in the teaching materials redevelopment.In order to help teachers use textbooks reasonably and effectively,this study puts forward some suggestions.This study has some practical significance,but there are also many deficiencies,which needs to be improved in the future study.
