A Study On UNRRA And The Rehabilitation Of Europe After The Second World War

The Second World War,which is in the middle age of twentieth century,brought deep disaster to every country all of the World.In the area of 10,160,000 square miles of Europe,stretching from the English Channel to the Azov seas,every single person had suffered horrific scars of war.Although the final success of the international anti-Fascist war,Europe had a long way of reconstruction to go through.During this tough time,the establishment and works of United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration(UNRRA)certainly had critical meaning to the European countries which need immediate relief.In fact,UNRRA truly made a great contribution to the Rehabilitation of the postwar Europe.The early idea of relief and rehabilitation came from the United Kingdom,then it evolved into a concrete action plan after a series of developments.Through long-term discussions and consultations,the United States,the United kingdom,the Soviet Union and other countries finally established the UNRRA on the basis of this action plan.UNRRA is the first international humanitarian organization all of the world,and its works relied on the funds supplied by all the member countries and other non-government organizations.During the five years between establishment and dissolution,the UNRRA has provided eleven European countries or regions with a great deal of assistance including food,medical care,transportation,industrial and agricultural reconstruction.Although those programs did not help all the European countries achieve a renaissance in a short time,it did help all the recipient countries walk away from the shadow of war.Except that,UNRRA assumed the main responsibility for the displacement works and helped millions of refugees repatriated to their hometowns.Although there are some problems in UNRRA’s work,the significant contribution of UNRRA to the reconstruction of post-war Europe should not beignored.
