Chen Chung-hwan's Argument On Substance In Aristotle's Categories

Chen chung-hwan is an expert on Plato and Aristotle.He has a very important discussion on Plato and Aristotle.In Aristotelian philosophy,Chen chung-hwan constructed the progressing history of Aristotle's Substance by using the method of genesis.Chen chung-hwan thinks that the systematic method of Aristotle's doctrine in the past,were often used to pursue an overall consistency and coordination,so for the contradictions in the theory of Aristotle has deliberately ignored.And it is pointed out that Chen chung-hwan thinks Aristotle's theory of contradictions is the most important part of Aristotle's doctrine,Therefore,this ignorance of contradictions is not only conducive to restoring the original appearance of Aristotle's doctrine,but also conducived to our research and understanding of Aristotle's thoughts.After Chen chung-hwan criticized the systematic method,he believed that in order to restore the Original appearance of Aristotle's substance,it was only possible to examine Aristotle's doctrine(which were contradictoried)by using the method of genesis theory.and we will understand the different stages in progressing history of Aristotle's Substance.Therefore,Chen chung-hwan constructed the progressing history of Aristotle's Substance by using the method of genesis,Chen chung-hwan's construction began with the concept of substance in the Categories.Chen chung-hwan believes that Aristotle started with the predicate of logic in the Categories,Aristotle made the individual things as the first substance and the genus and species as the second substance.The contents of Chapter VIII of the fifth volume of Metaphysics are the same as those in the Categories.The difference is that Aristotle no longer strictly distinguishes between predicate of logic and the boundary of appendices.The scope of application of both is completely equivalent,so the features of substance such as This and Detachment have also been given to the Form.Chen chung-hwan believes that this is a transitional stage in the progressing history of Aristotle's Substance.With Aristotle's analysis of being of the twentieth Volume of Metaphysics,Aristotle formed the triple Substance,Chen chung-hwan thinks this is a new stage in progressing history of Aristotle's Substance.Until the seventh and eighth volumes of Metaphysics,Chen chung-hwan believes that Aristotle completed the transformation of Substance from individual things to Forms.Chen chung-hwan's construction of Aristotle's Substance history benefits from using the method of genesis.But Chen chung-hwan's method of genesis is different from Jaeger's method of genesis,what Chen chung-hwan uses is not a purely method of genesis but a synthesis of genesis and systematic.It is the synthesis of this method that frees chung-hwan from the deliberated neglect of Aristotle's contradictory doctrine,and makes chung-hwan's approach different from Jaeger's,which constructed the progressing history of Aristotle's Substance by on a single level.The synthesis of the method not only reflects the longitudinal development of Aristotle's thought,but also reflects the level of Aristotle's thought.
