China has a long history of portrait painting. There has been legend about portraits in theShang Dynasty that people paint human figures on wooden sticks in order to seek talents. Suchstory may with the legendary. But the story of“Lose wife because of painting her”in《ShuoYuan》by Liu Xiang who lived in the Western Han Dynasty, was quite authentic. These legendsand records can prove the ancient Chinese portrait has been exist several thousand years, andas a kind of art it has developed early in ancient China. After experienced Han Dynasty, JinDynasty and Tang dynasty, then the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, portraits survived. Alarge number of artists who were good at portraits and many vivid masterpieces appeared at thattime. But it is undeniable that portraits are declining while other types of art developed, becausemost of the portrait painters are folk painters and less people pay attention. This situationcontinued until the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the late Ming Dynasty, all kinds of paintingfaction boomed. A new school of portrait painting named“Bo Chen”which was created by ZengJing was an impressive one at that time. Zeng Jing was very famous in south of the YangtzeRiver because of his excellent portrait skills. His work can meet the requirements of the literateswas the reason that made him popular. He floated in Jin Ling, Jiang Su and Zhe Jiang with manypainters followed him, so finally they formed a very important style of portraits. The so called“Bo Chen”was named after Zeng Jing’s another name.Zeng Jing developed China portraits to a new level, his contribution cannot be ignored. Thereason that he made such great achievements is the decades of hard work when he floating inJiang Su and Zhe Jiang Provinces. His painting has been recognized and appreciated by theliterates, and he made himself among them successfully. This made his school of portraitsdevelop and grow. The students of Zeng Jing were all across the country which made his schoolof painting reached the peak in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The portraits style had acertain impact on Japanese portraits.Zeng Jing’s works reached the highest level of both appearance and sprits, vivid and lifelike.They can vivid express the inherent and essence of the subject which are things that the excellentpainters continuing pursuit for. We can see from the works that Zeng Jing was very attention to such stills. His works not only inherited the doctrine of form and spirit, mind-nature theory, butalso inherited and developed another essence of Chinese figure painting -“Line”. In addition, hewas insight in composition of picture frame, so the range of the scope feels broaden. He seldomuse close shot to foil, so the image of the portraits fits very well. Subtlety in craft, performance,and effect are all the outstanding points of Zeng Jing’s works.This article is a focus on the exploration of the characteristics and causes of Zeng Jing’sworks; the research idea is based on the summary of the available information theory. I willfatherly research the examples of argument from the social society background and his livingenvironment, use the analysis of his works to explore causes and characteristics of his skills.Also I will use the analysis of his life and social status to search the original portrait style andformation, to persue the academic value and the inspiration for contemporary portraits.
