English reading course is an important module of English teaching.Classroom teaching is a main way to teach English reading.Therefore,the effect of classroom teaching is crucial.Teaching is a continuous and interactive process of communication between teachers and students.In this process,teachers and students deliver information mainly through two ways:verbal and nonverbal communication.For a long time,most of teachers have always attached importance to verbal communication in teaching,while ignoring nonverbal communication.In classroom teaching,teachers’ nonverbal communication is very important.Whether teachers can apply nonverbal communication appropriately is the key to successful teaching.In recent years,domestic and foreign scholars have carried out a lot of researches on nonverbal communication and reading teaching.However,in the context of private colleges,selecting Uygur students as research subjects,it is rare to see the research on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of teachers’ nonverbal communication in English reading courses.Based on the related theory of nonverbal communication,this paper chooses two English teachers of Changsha Medical College and two classes of Uygur students(120 freshmen in all)in the same major as subjects.The data is collected by the classroom observation method and processed by Microsoft Excel 2003.Classroom observation and reading skills test are adopted to investigate college English teachers’ nonverbal communication in classroom teaching in order to explore the relationship between nonverbal communication and classroom atmosphere,students’ participation and learning outcome.Through the data collection,classification,comparison and analysis,the study found that:1)Both of the two teachers apply nonverbal communication in college English reading course consciously or unconsciously,which embodies in a variety of positive or negative nonverbal behaviors.2)Positive nonverbal behaviors do help to create a positive classroom atmosphere,build a harmonious teacher-student relationship,stimulate students’ participation and improve the teaching efficiency in reading course.3)In the teaching of reading courses,due to the weak foundation of English,Uygur students are more dependent on teachers’ nonverbal communication than Han students to understand the reading theories and text content. |
