According to College English Syllabus, college English teaching is just based on the textbooks. English teachers are training the students the ways of speaking, listening, reading, and so on. English is a language which is a tool used to communicate with others. Communication contains two aspects: verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Some English teachers introduced some cultural points partly, although some of the teachers have been aware of introducing some cultural contents in English teaching. Some teachers began to pay attention to cultivating students'intercultural communicative competence in English teaching as the intercultural communication increasing. But the nonverbal communication was ignored as an important part of intercultural communicative competence. The new aims and requirements for Chinese college English teaching were, mentioned in The Teaching Requirements of College English Courses(on trial) promulgated by Ministry of Education in January, 2004, that students'comprehensive abilities(including the abilities of English thinking, understanding, expressing and of intercultural communication) of using English and provide the integrated cultural qualities should be developed. While the intercultural communicative competence mentioned in our syllabus is a great progress in the area of English teaching and research, it wasn't mentioned that what should be done about the intercultural communicative competence. This thesis focuses on cultivating college students'nonverbal communicative competence and its inspiration in college English teaching. The results of this research suggest that the study of nonverbal communicative competence has potential significance to college English teaching and it can be futher studied.
