English listening is an important and critical skill that affects learners' English proficiency.In practical English teaching in junior high school,however,the importance of listening teaching has not received enough attention and the teaching effect is not satisfactory.In addition,in English listening learning,students have low interest and motivation.Moreover,most students express different levels of listening anxiety and fear of English listening,which is a negative factor in English listening teaching.This thesis applies the multimodal teaching method to English listening teaching.It is hoped that this study will explore how to apply multimodal teaching method to English listening teaching in junior high school.Also,it purposes to reduce students' listening anxiety,and improve students' listening competence.There are two main research questions in this thesis:(1)Can the multimodal teaching method reduce junior high school students' English listening anxiety?(2)Can the multimodal teaching method improve junior high school students' English listening competence?The author conducted a four-month experimental research in two classes of seven grade in the No.17 middle school of Guangzhou.There are 43 students in each class.Their level of English before the experiment was comparable.The author randomized class 6 as the experimental class that accepted the multimodal teaching method for listening teaching.Class 2 was chosen to be the control class and adopted the traditional English listening teaching.The study used quantitative and qualitative research methods.The research tools included questionnaire,interview and test.Questionnaire survey and interview were conducted to understand students' listening anxiety before and after the experiment.The test was conducted to understand the changes in English listening score and total score of students before and after the experiment.After the experiment,SPSS 19.0 was used to analyze the results of the questionnaire survey and the results of pre-test and post-test.Through the analysis and discussions of questionnaire,interview and test results,it shows that after the application of multimodal teaching method in English listening teaching,the listening anxiety of students in the experimental class has been obviously alleviated.The English listening score and total score of experimental class are more pronouncedly improved than those of the control class.Therefore,it's believed that the multimodal teaching method is feasible and effective in practical listening teaching in junior high school.At the end of the thesis,the author puts forward some pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research and points out the inadequacies of the research.
