The thesis is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is an excerpt from Chapters5-6 of the doctoral dissertation The Cultural Translation of U.S.Television Programs and Movies: Subtitle Groups as Cultural Brokers in China,written by Ms.Chi-hua Hsiao at the University of California.This section mainly analyzes the moralities of subtitlers and audiences,offering a detailed examination of how subtitlers moralizing their unauthorized use of U.S.TV programs and movies.The author’s translation practice is mainly guided by Katharina Reiss’ s text type theory.According to Reiss’ s classification,the source text is a research text that belongs to “informative text”.Informative text is intended to convey information,with emphasis on content and subject matter.The translator can try to make the translation conform to the Chinese expression,rather than its original form of expression.Based on the above-mentioned theory,the author,in terms of vocabulary and syntax,makes flexible use of translation techniques such as amplification,conversion of part of speech,changes of sentence pattern to achieve the best translation effect.Through this translation practice,the author’s translation has been promoted.He understands that in order to do translation well,the translator needs proper translation theory and high cultural accomplishment.At the same time,the author realizes that he needs to make further efforts to improve his linguistic competence and professionalism. |
