This thesis investigates the ancient vernacular interjections using statistical analysis,systematic and multidimensional cognitive methods,which consists of five following parts:The first part "Introduction" describes research objectives,reviews previous research on interjections,explains significance for the research,and indicates research methodology and methods.Also,the source and selection of corpus is provided in this part.The second part "Determination of an ancient vernacular interjection and establishment of ancient vernacular interjection system" determines the judgement standards for an interjection with three different angles-unit character,grammatical function and semantic function,and also classifies interjections from the perspectives of stage division and emotion type to identify necessary contents for the ancient vernacular interjection system.The third part "The system of ancient vernacular interjection in Tang,Song and Yuan Dynasties" summarizes the basic situation of interjections in Tang,Song and Yuan Dynasties and displays the information in a form.And on this basis,this part describes the interjections according to the four types.The fourth part "The development of ancient vernacular interjections in the Ming and Qing Dynasties" begins with an overview of the basic situation of interjections during the Ming and Qing dynasties and displays the information in a form.Then this part describes the interjections according to the four types and finally summarizes the development of ancient vernacular interjections in the Ming and Qing dynasties.The fifth part "Conclusion" sums up the findings and point out the limitations.By investigating and analyzing all the corpus,the following conclusions can be drawn:1.The ancient vernacular interjections developed rapidly over the Ming and Qing Dynasties.There were 57 interjections appearing 712 times throughout the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty.Compared with the Tang,Song and Yuan Dynasties,the number and the occurrence number of interjections in the Ming and Qing Dynasties increased by 200%and 408.55%respectively.2.One-syllable interjections are dominant among all the surveyed corpus.There were 46 one-syllable interjections in total,which is the highest interjection in terms of number.These one-syllable interjections dominantly appear 546 times,and the appearing frequency reached 89.74%and 74.12%in Tang,Song and Yuan Dynasties and Ming and Qing Dynasties,respectively.3.The single ancient vernacular interjection for expressing the emotion of surprise and praise are the most in number.Among the fifty-seven single interjections,there were 29 interjections for expressing surprise and praise(accounting for 50.88%),14 for plaint and sorrow(24.56%),9 for aversion and angry(15.79%),and 5 for alertness and awakening(8.77%).
