This article explores the instructional design of children's English picture books from the perspective of multiliteracies,aiming to attract English teachers' attention to attaching importance to teaching children's English picture books and cultivating pupils' multiliteracies.As one of the most popular English learning materials,the educational value of children's English picture books is bound to be found.In addition,as the information and communication technology continuously develops,pupils are no longer satisfied with the traditional printed materials to acquire knowledge and convey their information.To accord with the need of pupils in the new era,cultivating pupils' multiliteracies becomes one of the most significant goals of English teaching in primary schools.This paper mainly studies how to make good use of children's English picture books to cultivate pupils' multiliteracies and hopes to provide some practical pedagogical implications for English teachers in primary schools to teach children's English picture books from the perspective of multiliteracies and make a certain contribution to English teaching in primary schools.Based on the purpose of the research,this paper is going to discuss the following three questions.(1)What is the present situation of instructional design of children's English picture books?(2)What is the teaching process of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies?(3)How can English teachers in primary schools carry out the procedure of instructional design of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies?To achieve the goal of the paper,first of all,the author looks into the present situation of instructional design of children's English picture books by questionnaires,interview and classroom observation.Then through a teaching case,the author introduces the specific teaching process of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies.Finally,the author illustrates the basic procedure of instructional design of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies.Based on specific research,the findings are as follows.First of all,according to the analysis of teacher questionnaire,parent questionnaire,pupil interview and classroom observation,the author finds that most English teachers,parents and pupils are quite interested in children's English picture books and they have realized the importance of improving pupils' multiliteracies.However,English teachers have some difficulty and problems in cultivating pupils' multiliteracies when they teach children's English picture books.In addition,based on the teaching and learning model of multiliteracies and the design theory of multiliteracies,the teaching case of a children's English picture book “Baby Pictures” and the case of pupils' class presentation confirm the practical and educational value of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies.In the end,in order to effectively cultivate pupils' multiliteracies,the paper illustrates the basic procedure of instructional design of children's English picture books based on multiliteracies.The ultimate aim of the paper is to attract more English teachers in primary schools to select proper children's English picture books and design appropriate classroom activities to cultivate pupils' multiliteracies.
