The "Vacancy" Art In Ali Smith's Novels

Alain Rober-Grillet,a new French novel theorist,proposed that the contradiction between language and reality determines that the new novel should adopt the aesthetic strategy of “vacancy”.One of the representative writers of the British avant-garde novel,Ali Smith,also made a fairly round use of vacancy art.Her novel has a strong experimental nature,the plot is filled with coincidences and accidents,the perspective is constantly changing,and the structure is open.Her works Hotel Word,There But For The and The Accidental cover a large number of vacancies,reflecting the beauty of the “vacancy” of art.This thesis begins with the literary theory of “vacancy”,and explores the vacant art of the above three novels by Ali Smith in terms of structure construction,artistic image creation and inner connotation performance,and feels the eternal charm brought by “vacancy”.Firstly,in terms of the structure construction of three novels,the vacant art is mainly embodied in the incompleteness of the structure of novels.The thesis analyzes the vacancy techniques and the artistic effects of Smith's three novels from the beginning,the end and the plot.Secondly,in terms of modeling the artistic images of three novels,the vacant art is mainly embodied in the image quality of the novels' simpleness and implicitness.This paper analyzes the “expansion power” of Smith's novels in terms of overall artistic images from “vague language”,“transfigured character images” and “vacancy of environmental description”.In the end,in terms of the inherent implication of the novels,Smith's unique vacancy charm is experienced by analyzing the “uncertainty” and “diversity” of the novels' theme.Readers understand how the vacancy art in Smith's novels is embodied in various parts of the novels,which helps to deepen the understanding of Smith's novels.On the other hand,Smith applied the vacant art technique to the creation of the novels,highlighting the existence of reality and the pursuit of literature.
