Ling Shuhua Novel Creation

Ms. Shuhua Ling, as one of the representatives of the earliest female writersin contemporary China, was known and acknowledged for her writing in latetwenties and early thirties of last century. Her writings are distinguished fromothers for her unique topics, stories and style. This thesis focuses its analysis onher character implications and writing style.Although all female writers of Lin's generation paid great attention tovarious topics on females, instead of probing into social problems existed then,Lin differentiated her writings by describing the female herself under certaincircumstances, such as the contradiction between family and society, the collisionbetween tradition and modernization. She made the inner mind of the femalesunder her pen clear to readers by implicating her sympathy or/and satire in thetext. While creating some teenage images, she incorporated her own childhoodinside the official residence into her text and depicted the emotional collapse orfailure during their grow-up.As a painter at the same time, Lin's taste and mastery of painting influencedher writing and helped create her unique way of writing. There is similaritybetween the tendency of implicating in her text and the popular taste ofintellectuals on painting. Lin also applied the painting techniques in her writingwhich, thus, became painting-like: the vivid portray of views in her writingsreveals the insight of a painter, the creation of characters shows the characteristicsof concrete and imaginative painting, the subtle emotional description displaysthe detailed refinement of sketching painting.
