A Study On The English Translation Of Cohesion And Coherence In Liao Zhai From The Perspective Of Discourse Analysis

The purpose of discourse analysis is divided into two aspects: The first is to understand the nature and characteristics of language;The second is understanding the meaning and reality of language.Discourse cohesion and discourse coherence are the two most important parts of discourse analysis theory.Discourse cohesion is the necessary condition of discourse coherence.Discourse analysis theory is applied to the study of English translation of novels,which helps guide translators to better understand the meaning of the original discourse,and produce better translations.The bridging of discourse analysis theory and translation studies can provide new research ideas for English translation of classical novels.The English translation of Liao Zhai,a Chinese classical novel,has attracted widespread attention from both domestic and foreign scholars.Because current scholars mostly study the English translation of a single characteristic in Liao Zhai from the perspective of discourse analysis theory.At present,the literature using cohesion and coherence theory to analyze Liao Zhai is still relatively rare.Faced with this state of affairs,this thesis explores the effects and influences of discourse analysis theory on novels translation studies by analyzing examples selected from the English versions of Liao Zhai.Cohesion theory and coherence theory from discourse analysis theory will serve as the theoretical basis.The specific research questions are as follows:1.Is there any feasibility in the application of discourse analysis theory to the study of the English translations of Liao Zhai?2.In what specific way is cohesion theory realized in the process of their English translations?3.How to deal with the main factors that influence the novel coherence in the process of their English translations?Based on the three research questions mentioned above,this thesis examined cohesion and coherence in different English versions of Liao Zhai using the theoretical description,text analysis and the method of induction under the framework of discourse cohesion and discourse coherence,two basic theories in discourse analysis.The study found that discourse analysis theory provides a deeper theoretical support for translation practice.Discourse analysis theory requires the translator to use the whole text as a basis,to focus on the context and sociocultural background to achieve an equivalence between the source text and the translation in the most reasonable way.Under the guidance of discourse analysis theory,the meaning of translation is truly realized,that is,the true meaning of the original text is reproduced.1.Discourse analysis as theoretical perspective,combined with the translator’s understanding of the cultural background and context of the original text,provides enlightenment for all aspects of the English translation of the novel,thus affecting the2.translator’s choice of translation strategies and translation skills.3.Discourse analysis theory has many influences in the translation of novels.On the one hand,the translator must analyze and reason the explicit information of the original text.On the other hand,it is necessary to consider the cognitive context of target readers,choose the best means of cohesion,and convey the original information intention of the author so that communicative intention is transparent to the target readers.4.In the process of translation,translators must integrate social and cultural backgrounds,apply language choices artfully,and adopt appropriate strategies.While embodying the original style of the text,language habits and aesthetic awareness of the target readers should be taken into account so as to promote successful exchange and interaction between eastern and western culture.
