Though not being the main content of the grottoes, the herringbone shape of decorative patterns in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes of the Northern Dynasties is an essential part of all the grottoes. It can not only enhance the spaciousness of the grottoes to express the emptiness of buddhist ideology and the pure land of Buddhism, but also help exploring the manifestation and content of the cultural exchange between the East and the West through colorful patterns, thus laying a perfect foundation for the glorious decorative patterns of Sui and Tang dynasties. In addition,we can further explore how to use the beauty-in-form law of objective existence in the northern dynasties to finally form the herringbone shape of decorative patterns. There are three reasons for the formation of the herringbone shape of decorative patterns in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes of the Northern Dynasties.Through the analysis of the shape, color and structure of the herringbone shape of decorative patterns as well as the architectural form of the herringbone shape at the top of the grottoes, and the exploration of the types and features in all stages of the patterns,it is concluded that one factor to form the patterns is the architectural form of the herringbone shape at the top of the grottoes. It is inferred that the herringbone shape of decorative patterns can enhance the spaciousness of the grottoes.Through tracing of the plant patterns in the herringbone shape of decorative patterns and the architectural form of the herringbone shape,it is pointed out that the most direct cause to form the decorative patterns is the motif plant patterns. It is inferred that the motif plant patterns of the two structures from the end of North Wei Dynasty to Northern Zhou Dynasty were both in India. The balanced pattern was passed to Dunhuang through the north, while the local symmetrical structure and some of the lotus flower models of symmetrical and balanced pattern were directly influenced by India and passed into Dunhuang through the south.Through the comparison and analysis of the shape, color and structure of the patterns,it is concluded that some pattern elements from the west and the pattern elements in the Chinese Cultural Circle were restructured or reconstructed. So thethird factor to form the herringbone shape of decorative patterns in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes of the Northern Dynasties is the beauty-in-form law of objective existence. |
