As one important part in the grotto art, early decorative pattern art of Mogao grottoes in Dun Huang City not only play a very important role in creating a kind of religious atmosphere for caves, but also display a living history of design art on its decorative pattern development in the past years. It has a visual performance for the study of Chinese and foreign art culture mutual-blending and the development law of design art. Through the study of the predecessors for decorative pattern art, the Paper has carried on the deep discussion on the early decorative pattern art, combining with my own understanding of decorative pattern art in three terms:Mogao grottoes architectural decorative pattern art, the art decoration design of Buddhist utensils, and the aesthetics characteristics of decorative pattern art, by means of comparative study on archaeology, iconography and art theory. It found that the characteristics of inheritance and development of decorative pattern art in different historical period come down in one continuous line, which is the inner reason. External reasons include social economic development and huge support for bundist from upper ruling class. In addition, the early decorative art of Mogao grottoes follows the aesthetic principles such as "symmetry and balance","unity and change","logical and repetition";"Plain and elegance","construction and decoration","inclusion",etc.
