Muxi?usually romanized as Muqi?was surnamed Li according to legend. He was born in what is now Sichuan province and became a monk in Hangzhou where he took the monastic name Fachang.Muxi is a typical representative of Southern Song dynasty Chan?or Zen?painting.Little known during his lifetime, his works spread to Japan after his death where he was called"the great benefactor of Japanese painting"[1]?1?.Muxi's work influenced Japanese painting, gardens, the tea ceremony and even Japanese aesthetics.Nobel Prize-winning artist Kawabata Yasunari and famous Japanese painter Higashiyama Kizai have both expressed their gratitude for Muxi's renovation of Japanese aesthetics. This paper explores the significance of Muxi in the history of painting through the introduction of Zen and Zen paintings, looking at Muxi's life and the characteristics of his work.It also discusses the evaluation and influence of his work from a historical perspective. The author analyses Muxi's brush and ink techniques and use of blank space in his work Six Persimmons to explore the following three main principles of Muxi's creative enlightenment:First, small details should obey the larger whole;Second,Chinese painting is an ancient art and should be passed down.In spirit,it should dare to break conventions and recreate the traditions of artistic form and appearance,to create works in its own style, according to its nature.Third, learning Chinese painting requires strong foundations and ceaseless practice. The ancients spoke of“preparing the ground before applying the paint,”and outstanding works of art must be derived from good intentions.Emphasizing the cultivation of one's own qualities in daily life is conducive to artistic creation.
