Separation anxiety is the process that everyone has to go through.Kindergarten is the first group living environment that children will confront after leaving their own family environment.It is normal that enrolling in kindergarten initially causes children’ s and caregivers’ separation anxiety.Mothers are almost the first ones that newborn will contact with.Mental health of mothers(include anxiety)is bond up with separation anxiety of children.Maternal separation anxiety might be a crucial factor to children’s separation anxiety and their kindergarten adjustment.Therefore,the purpose of this study was to understand the relations among maternal and children’ s separation anxiety and children’ s kindergarten adjustment.93 3-year-old children that enrolled in kindergarten in September 2017 from Chengdu participated in the interviewing.Their mothers filled in the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale,and Preschool Adjustment Scale.The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics,t-tests,Pearson correlations,multiple regressions and path analysis.The main results were as followed:1.Maternal separation anxiety belonged to lower middle level.Thereinto the level perception of effects on the child was minimum.Children showed medium separation anxiety.Children’s kindergarten adjustment belonged to superior middling.It was divided into five dimensions.Scores as follow: positive affect within the school setting > peer competence > adjustment to preschool routines > prosocial behavior > ego strength.2.There were significant differences in kindergarten adjustment.Girls in overall adjustment were higher than boys.And the group with nursery experiment in overall adjustment was higher than the group without nursery experiment.3.Correlation results showed maternal separation anxiety and perception of effects on the child were correlated negatively with children’ s kindergarten adjustment.Employment-related separation concern was not related children’ s kindergarten adjustment.Maternal separation anxiety and perception of effects on the child were correlated positively with children’ s separation anxiety.Employment-related separation concern was not related children’ s separation anxiety.Children’ s separation anxiety was correlated negatively with their kindergarten adjustment.4.Regression analysis indicated that maternal and children’ s separation anxiety can explain part of children’ s kindergarten adjustment in total.Children’ s separation anxiety can explain part of children’ s kindergarten adjustment.5.Path analysis results showed maternal separation anxiety lead into children’ s separation anxiety and children’ s kindergarten adjustment directly.Children’ s separation anxiety acted as a part mediator between maternal separation and children’ s kindergarten adjustment. |
