Han Shiheng is a famous Chinese modern writer and literary translator.Han has published abundant critical articles and essays in his life, including Rouge,The Collection of Jagged View etc.His translation works are as many as more than 30,and involve a variety of language, including English,Japanese and Russian, etc. His Chinese translated version of Hawthorn's The Scarlet Letter is regarded as one of the earliest Chinese translation of the novel.Based on the manipulation theory proposed by Lefevere, this thesis analyzes the influence of ideology on Han's three Chinese versions of The Scarlet Letter. The three versions made by Han Shiheng respectively published in 1948,1954 and 1981.Published in different historical backgrounds and influenced by different ideological and cultural background in different times, the three versions differ much in translation.Since the “cultural turn” in the 1980 s,the translation studies advocate to study translation from a broader cultural level.Researches pay more attention to study the translation from culture and the relationship between translation and the outside world.André Lefevere, one of the representatives of Manipulation School, expressed his view in his book Translation,Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Fame. For him, translation is a kind of rewriting,a kind of manipulation which was mainly controlled by ideology, poetics and patronage,of which ideology is the most important element. This thesis focuses on the influence of ideological manipulation on Han's translation. This thesis first introduces and makes a survey on the Chinese versions of Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter in China, then summarizes the previous studies on the translation.Later, the author makes a brief introduction of Lefevere's manipulation theory, especially the ideological manipulation and finally states the relationship between translation and ideology.Through an earnest analysis of the dominant ideology and Han's personal ideology in the three times and careful reading of the translated text,we can know that Han Shiheng's translation was influenced and manipulated by the social ideology and personal ideology in the translation process.Through the analysis of the ideological manipulation on Han's three Chinese versions, the author expects to not only help the studies on Hawthorne in China, expend the scope of the translation studies on Hawthorne's works, but also be helpful to the study of the translation studies on American literature in China.
