A Study On The Translation And Introduction Of The Scarlet Letter In China Under The Guidance Of The Theory Of Manipulation

Compared with the traditional translation in the linguistics category to putemphasis on the universality of the language and sought equivalence, the theory ofmanipulation in broad historic, cultural areas explores the diverseness of target languageas a carrier of culture in translation as well as introduction. This diverseness invariablyruns through the translation of "The Scarlet Letter”. Let us notice the different periodsof translation bears the deep imprint of the times. The same source language bringsvarious literary language and diverse literary figures in every individual translator’swriting. Let us notice this diverseness, not mistranslation and incorrectness, but the"afterlife" of original works. It is the characteristics which make the original works tosurvive and spread, and thus worthy of praise rather than curse.The latest theory of Translation Studies--Manipulation Theory was applied in thispaper as principle to analyze the three versions, which are translation of Zhang Menglin,translation of Han Shiheng and Translation of Su Fuzhong. These three versions arerepresentative translation of The Scarlet Letter in three periods, the late Republic, theearly days of liberation, and after the reform and opening. And these versions will bediscussed respectively from the ideological, the poetics, and the patronage according tothe Theory of Manipulation. The discussion will be interpreted factors that lead to eachtranslation differences, including the translator’s personal factors, the historic andcultural factors altogether. After all, translation is always carried out under certainhistorical and cultural context, rather than produced and accepted in a vacuum.This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is the introduction to describesome basic research condition. Then, part two is the second chapter. Which is mainly to be investigated the Manipulation Theory in retrospect and The Scarlet Letter’stranslating over the years for the sake of objective selection. Chapter three, chapter four,and chapter five are, lastly, fall into the third part. In this part, The Scarlet Letter’stranslations are, respectively and descriptively, well expound in the aspect of ideology,poetics, patronage to illustrate the diverseness of translation and introduction.
