The flipped classroom model is a form of technology-supported pedagogical practice where teachers deliver instructional content through recorded videos before class and then discuss and solve students’ problems in class.Recently, the flipped classroom model has been adopted in English teaching. After reviewing related literature on the flipped English teaching, the researcher realizes that the research mainly deals with the flipped English classroom in higher education. It is a pity that there are very few studies on the implementation of the flipped classroom model in English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools.Meanwhile, the unsatisfying English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools calls for the application of the flipped classroom model to bring improvement. Therefore, the researcher conducts this qualitative research with the purpose of deriving possible procedures and designs of English vocabulary teaching in the flipped classroom of senior high school.Three research questions will be addressed in this research: 1.How is vocabulary taught in the flipped classroom? 2.What are the advantages of English vocabulary teaching in the flipped classroom? 3.What are the areas that need improving of English vocabulary teaching in the flipped classroom? To answer the questions, two classes of 70 students and 3 English teachers exposed to the flipped classroom model from Chengdu No.7 High School are sampled.Class observations, journals and interviews are utilized to collect data that are analyzed by coding. The findings indicate that a vocabulary lesson in the flipped classroom consists of two major stages: the online video prior to class and the face-to-face class. The online video presents the target vocabulary in context with explanations and e-assignments.The face-to-face class is composed of revision, reinforcement and production, during which topic-based activities are organized to create an active learning environment for authentic use of vocabulary and for the development of higher-order thinking skills. The advantages of English vocabulary teaching in the flipped classroom are as follows: online videos make preview more personalized and preparation more adequate, and ensure ample class time for productive learning. With increased teacher-student and student-student interaction, the face-to-face class allows plentiful opportunities for students to use the vocabulary and develop high-order thinking skills. At present, the two drawbacks of the flipped classroom are excessive workload in the early stages and ineffective supervision.Based on the findings, suggestions for the implementation of the flipped classroom model in English vocabulary teaching of senior high school are made.Teachers are advised to adapt themselves to the flipped classroom model and change their design of class activities.Administrators should keep the class size small to ease the burden on teachers and enable teachers to supervise students before class. It is hoped that this research can help improve English vocabulary teaching of senior high school, enrich the application of the flipped classroom model in English teaching, and shed some light on related topics for teachers and administrators who might employ the flipped classroom model in their professional practice. |
