As a way of art expression and practice, sketch refers to a painting method which takes real images and situations such as landscapes, still life, figures as its objects for observation and presentation, and it emphasizes on real observation and the spiritual experience between the object and the painter.Latest centuries have witnessed the increasing influences on Chinese traditional arts by western paintings and aesthetic theories, particularly in the aspect of modern and contemporary art practice and education. The traditional indoor paintings performed by Chinese scholars in their studies and the way of art inheritance have been changed to new training and painting methods which focus on outdoors instead of indoors,on observing real situations instead of copying classics. These paintings, which depict real situations, are named “paint from life”in English and “xiesheng”in Chinese. This paper consists of four chapters.Chapter One gives an outline for the ways of viewing including sketching, and discusses the evolution process of the ways of viewing from the aspect of art history.Chapter Two takes representational artists Paul Cézanne,Giacometti and Giorgio Morandi as examples to illustrate the ways of viewing for representational paintings from perspectives of direct nature, visual images and solitude spirit.Chapter Three investigates the concept of sketch more thoroughly from two paths of rebuilding reality as well as perceptions and images. The last chapter explains the enlightenment and guidance brought to me by “paint from life”,and the important significance of the ways of viewing of representational paintings on art practice nowadays.
