Recently,discussion of students’ core competency has quickly become the hot topic in educational circles.In China,the implementation of students’ core competencies depends on the teaching of various subjects.While as a basic subject,English plays an important role in the development of the students’ language competencies.The English reform of college entrance examination is twice a year.Many students and parents think that the status and weight of English are weakened,and they do not have a comprehensive and profound understanding of the educational value of English discipline.Therefore,the study explores the strategies to cultivate English subject core competencies by investigating the current situation of English subject core competencies in senior high school.This study intends to discuss three research questions:1)What problems exist in English subject core competency in senior high school? 2)What are the causes of problems in English subject core competency in senior high school? 3)What strategies can be used for cultivating the English subject core competency in senior high school?This paper regards all the senior high school students in Jilin city of Jilin province as object,by means of the questionnaire,classroom observation and interview method and from the four aspects: language ability,learning ability,thinking competency and cultural character to explore the status quo of English subject core competencies.The author explores the current situation of English subject core competencies from four aspects: language ability,learning ability,thinking ability and cultural characters.The author through the survey found that the English subject core competencies in senior high school exist the following problems:a.High school students pay attention to language knowledge rather than language ability.b.High school students are passive in English learning and generally low in learning ability.c.Most high school English learners lack diverse thinking.d.High school students lack understanding of English national culture.In a word,the reasons for the above problems are as follows: Firstly,there was a bias in the school’s philosophy;Secondly,English teachers lack the core competency;Finally,students lack the self-cultivation of core competency.Therefore,for the above reasons,the author proposes the strategies to solve the problem:Firstly,the school should set up the right education concept;Secondly,teachers should strengthen the cultivation of their core competency.At last,students should pay moreattention to the core competency.This research is beneficial to promote the all-round development of students to achieve personal,enable students to better adapt to the future social development and promote lifelong learning;It is helpful for English teachers to construct correct concept of educating people and teaching ideas,and to improve their own teaching competency to better train students.It is conducive to promoting curriculum reform and implementing the goal of the moral education.Therefore,the results of this study have a certain value.However,there are some limitations in this paper,and the research questions need to be further explored and analyzed by professors.
