| With the deepening of English curriculum reform in China,the cultivation of students’ core English subject core competencies in the new era is conducive to the comprehensive implementation of the Party’s educational policy and the fundamental task of moral education.“Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standards(2017)” has also put forward the concept of “English Subject Core Competencies”,that is,“the correct values,essential characters and key abilities that students should achieve after learning the course,and the four connotations of English subject core competencies,namely,language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability”.From the perspective of the four connotations,this thesis explores the cultivation of English subject core competencies in the senior high schools in Lhasa through classroom observation,interviews and questionnaires,aiming to improve the English teaching level of the region and to fully implement the new curriculum reform.After the investigation,the author found that the cultivation of English subject core competencies in senior high schools in Lhasa is not very good and there is a certain gap between the basic requirements and the real situation.In the aspect of the language ability,students have a weak grasp of language knowledge,and their use of language skills,specifically,listening,speaking,reading and writing needs to be strengthened.In terms of the cultural awareness,most students can respect cultural diversity,but their cultural sensitivity is low,and their ability to undertake intercultural communication in English still needs to be improved.As for the quality of thinking,students’ observation and comparison abilities are satisfactory,but their abilities of induction,construction,criticism and innovation are poor.Concerning their learning ability,most students lack planning and initiative,and their ability to continuously reflect and adjust their learning methods and strategies in the learning process still need to be strengthened.The core factor of the new curriculum reform is combined with the four connotations of English subject core competencies.In terms of the language ability,teachers should give consideration to the cultivation of language knowledge and skills.They can organize some English activities in class,such as English dubbing competition,drama performance,English public speech delivery,etc.In the aspect of the cultivating students’ cultural awareness,firstly,the teaching materials should emphasize the content of cultural awareness and be close to students’ real life.Secondly,teachers should strengthen the penetration of Chinese and foreign cultures to help students improve their intercultural competency.On thinking ability,teachers should arrange a variety of activities to train students’ thinking ability,and encourage them to read extracurricular books.Diversified evaluation methods should be adopted in the daily evaluation so that students and teachers can receive more comprehensive feedback.In terms of the learning ability,teachers should have strategic guidance and pay attention to improving students’ interest in English.Teachers should also help students clarify their learning goals,make effective plans for their learning tasks,and choose appropriate ways to reflect on and adjust their learning schedules,so as to improve students’ interest and ability in learning English.As both schools and society have attached increasing importance to English subject core competencies,and there is still a lot of room for the improvement in English subject core competencies of the senior high school students in Lhasa,it is hoped that this research can provide some reference for the English curriculum reform. |
