One of the important representatives during the Romantic period,German composer Brahms was also known as the “3-B” composer in the history of music with two classical music masters,L.V.Beethoven and J.S.Bach.He admired classics and personally copied the works of early Italian and German composers. Therefore, many articles have mentioned that he was a traditional music composer, which means he loves classical music, but this is just a one-sided assessment on him. Now,in the research works of Western music community,he is no longer considered as a traditionalist,it is believed that his creation is not only the inheritance and enrichment of classical music, but is bold and innovative with a strong romanticism, especially in piano music.Although the piano work is not the climax of his creation,it is the starting point of his creation. His piano music highlights the his great contribution to piano music and his inner soul. This thesis, taking Brahms’ s late piano piece “Fantasia Collection” OP.116 as an example, attempts to conduct an in-depth research and explore its musical connotation with new methods from a newly perspective,i.e.,comprehensive analytical method. The thesis tries to lead in the theme by introducing Brahms and then analyze the Collection. The whole thesis can be divided into five parts;the first part introduces the life of Brahms and the development of fantasia;the second one analyzes the musical structure of each piece of music in the “Fantasia Collection”;part three is the major part of the thesis, the author will proceed from the inside of the work to the detailed analysis of the melody development of the Collection;the fourth part starts with the rhythm of the work,it tries to summarize the use of rhythm in the Collection and the generalization and particularity of the whole work in terms of rhythm;the last part will conduct an in-depth study from two aspects of the Collection: harmony and tonality, and conclude the characteristics of harmony and tonality in his music. The author will conduct his study from the above five aspects, summarizing the characteristics of the work in terms of music creation through his analysis.
