Dunhuang agriculture is a typical oasis agriculture. As the core resource of Dunhuang agricultural development, water plays an important role in the development of Dunhuang social development. The possession and distribution of water resources are likely to induce social changes and are of incalculable significance. There is a certain amount of water conservancy data in the Dunhuang literature.Although it is relatively scattered,it has high research value.Based on the achievements of previous scholars, the article focuses on the environmental characteristics of Dunhuang, the organization and operation of Drainage Society, and the belief in water gods. The natural environment provides an irreplaceable material basis for the survival of mankind and is a prerequisite for mankind to carry out production.Water resources have an irreplaceable significance to traditional agricultural society.Previous theories have discussed the political significance of water from the macro perspective of social development. The paper starts from Dunhuang environmental characteristics and artificial water systems, and highlights the important value of water conservancy in social development. The artificial irrigation network system in the Dunhuang area was basically perfect during the Tang and Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty. The artificial canals and natural rivers were used to transport water, which together irrigated the local land, promoted the development of local agriculture, and promoted Dunhuang to become the throat of the Chinese and Western traffic and to the Hexi Corridor.Even the development of the whole country has a far-reaching impact. In addition, the types of development and utilization of water resources in Dunhuang provide a basis for us to study the use of water resources and the formation of public water resources. The Dunhuang folk associations in the Tang and the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty presented a very diverse scene.Residents who use the aqueduct form a Drainage Society and engage in water irrigation and canal maintenance. The characteristics of seasonal changes in water resources in Dunhuang area led to frequent local channel maintenance.Drainage people under the leadership of Drainage Society voluntarily made repairs at their own expense to ensure the normal use of Dunhuang water conservancy facilities and the development of Dunhuangagriculture made an indelible contribution. With the development of the water conservancy order,Dunhuang has also formed and gradually improved the polytheism belief of various religions. This tradition, while strengthening the sense of belonging and attachment of the people, has also become a powerful defender of the social running order centered on water. While maintaining its own characteristics,it also serves as a microcosm of religious ritual activities during the Tang and the early Song dynasties. It provided a basis for us to study the social situation at that time.
