| The hedges are the important part of fuzzy language and they are the words which embellish or limit some fuzzy central language with changing the fuzzy extent and make the clear words become into the fuzzy one by restricted and modified them.This paper is classifying the hedges from the position form and their semantic types.The hedges can be classified into two major categories from the position form,and these two major categories are located before the central language and after the central language.From the semantic type,the hedges can be classified into five major categories,they are the hedges which express the possibility,nature-status,scope-quantity,degree-frequency and subjective-speculation.Meanwhile,this paper will summarize the pragmatic functions of different categorized hedges on the basis of the categories that the paper made.When the hedges locate before the central language to restrict and modify them,their pragmatic function is making the semantic fuzzy extent becomes smaller and the expression more correctly.As for the semantic pragmatic functions of hedges,the optative hedges have the functions with highlighting the polite manners and expressing the implication they have;the nature-status hedges narrow the fuzzy extent of the central language,having the pragmatic functions which make the expression more accuracy;the scope-quantity hedges have the functions that make the gap which between discourse and reality making the precise one become fuzzy;the degree-frequency hedges makes the frequency,number and the length of time interval in which the events occur fuzzy,using the hedges of frequency can make the expression more closer to the real life.At the same time,the degree hedges can enlarge or reduce its fuzzy extent,therefore,frequency-degree of hedges can make things expressed more closer to the facts and less arbitrary;subjective speculation hedges can change the semantic truth conditions in the sentences with making the expressions more flexible. |
