A Pragmatic Study Of Female Fuzzy Language

Just like preciseness, fuzziness is one of the intrinsic features of natural language which widely exists in people’s communication. The appropriate use of the fuzzy language contributes to successful interaction. Language which is a carrier of human thought and the significant communicative tool is inevitably affected by different genders. As a special group, women are affected by the social culture, physiology and psychology. Therefore, their languages are euphemistic and indeterminate.The dissertation is about the pragmatic study of fuzzy language employed by females from the perspective of pragmatic theories. It is not a mere static research of individual fuzzy words and expressions, but also the dynamic research of fuzzy language used by females in communication. There are six parts in the dissertation. Firstly, it introduces the background of the study. Secondly, it reviews the previous and recent research of the fuzzy language and female language. Thirdly, the author analyzes the basic theory of the fuzzy language as well as the theoretical framework of the paper. Fourthly, the author analyzes the characteristics of the fuzzy languages used by women from three levels:vocabulary, grammar and communication. Fifthly, it discusses positive and negative pragmatic functions of the fuzzy language used by women. The last part is the summary of the whole dissertation.The author selects the TV series Legend of Zhenhuan as the data of the dissertation, uses qualitative methodology to make a pragmatic research of fuzzy languages utilized by women. Through the research, the author finds that fuzzy language is the vital strategy for the women in their daily communication. If people do not pay attention to the situation and participants, barriers may arise in communication. Therefore, the appropriate use of the fuzzy language is an indication of the level of the language users’ pragmatic competence.
