The final purpose of teaching a foreign language is to cultivate students’ communicative competence.However,whether learners can communicate effectively not only depends on their linguistic competence,but also on their abilities to use the language appropriately in different situations,that is,pragmatic competence.Therefore,it is particularly important to cultivate and improve students’ pragmatic competence.But in terms of current class-teaching in high school,teachers have been paying too much attention to vocabulary and grammar for a long time but ignoring language functions due to the influence of exam-oriented education.As a result,the pragmatic competence of high school students is lower than expected.In this thesis,the author will try to find out some effective ways to cultivate and improve students’ pragmatic competence by taking some measures.The experiment will be carried out at Wen Yuan High School.In the experiment,the author will choose two classes,one experimental class and the other control class.In control class,the teacher will adopt traditional teaching methods and pay much attention to vocabulary and grammar.Instead,the teacher will focus on pragmatic knowledge,involve into culture factors,adopt context-based teaching and other measures in experimental class.Second,the author will use pre-test and post-test to assess their pragmatic competence level.Then,the data will be compared and analyzed.After a semester’s experiment,the author finds that the pragmatic competence of experimental class has been greatly improved.Although the competence in control class has also been improved,it belongs to natural improvement.So,it indicates that the measurements taken in experiment class are effective.This dissertation consists of five chapters.Chapter one is an introduction of the background information,goal,meaning of the study as well as the structure and main contents.Chapter Two introduces an important teaching method—Task-based teaching method and theoretical basis(Psychological basis and Interaction theory)as well as achievement of past generations which provides theoretical support for the research.Chapter Three is research design,which includes research questions,objects and methods and research process.Chapter Four carries on the experimental analysis.The author not only compares pre-test and post-test data but also analyzes questionnaire and interview results.Chapter Five is the conclusion and suggestions on how to improve pragmatic competence and reflections on the problem and deficiency in the experiment. |
