Travel is an important theme in the history of Chinese and foreign literature.Travel literature not only describes the movement of space in the body of the traveller and what he sees and hears during the journey, but also records the new knowledge of the world in the travellers' heart. And the process of rediscovering yourself. In addition, travel literature also describes the cultural exchanges and collisions encountered by travelers during their foreign travel, and travelers can examine and grow up in their interactions and dialogues with others. The construction of the journey and the dialogue and communication between the traveller and the other people also reflect the authors' profound thinking about the society and the times to which he belongs. In Journey to the West and the Lord of the Rings, the two groups of travelers are separated from the original ethnic group, undertake a mission and embark on a difficult and distant journey,in the course of the journey with different races, class geniuses, characters meet,After a series of tribulations to get training and growth, and ultimately complete the mission. There are similarities between the two works in terms of the identity of the traveller and the fantasy world he has experienced. This similarity is caused by the author's experience and the environment of the times. From the perspective of travel literature, this paper examines the two classic works of Journey to the West and the Lord of the Rings, and makes a thorough analysis of them from the perspective of literary narratology, cultural anthropology, text reading and parallel research. From the aspects of traveller, travel space,self-examination and reflection, the concepts of cultural anthropology "threshold person" and "threshold space" are introduced to redefine traveller and travel space. The traveler is regarded as the "threshold person" who is divorced from the original social culture,in the intermediate state of being neither one nor the other, and uses a more objective and neutral attitude to observe and reflect on the problems and shortcomings of the original society. The journey is regarded as a special social ritual to explore its effect on the mobility and communication of all social strata and to reflect on the social problems revealed in the process. After disregarding the original social identity, the traveler meets and talks with the other, and recognizes the choice of the "other" from these contacts anddialogues, and then thinks about what choice the ego should make in the face of desire and temptation.
