A Report On The Translation Of Caring For Plants From Perspective Of Narratology

The present report concentrates on the translation of Korean female writer Pyun Hye-young's fiction-Caring for Plants.As a thrill fiction,Caring for Plants is engrossing not only in the plot but also in its unique representation of narration.The entire story is limited to protagonist's point of view.On account of the unique techniques,the maintenance of the original style is considered as a primary requirement for the translator.As Mona Baker points out,the essence of translation is renarration,which shows the inseparable connection between narration and translation.The great significance of narratology lies in providing a new viewpoint for translation theory and practice including the analysis of semantics,pragmatics and discourse of text,and the analysis of narrative structure,thus giving consideration to both macroscopic and microscopic aspects of fiction translation.With the aid of narratology,the author of this report attempts to analyze how the rendition reproduces the narrative features in terms of narrative point of view,narrative presentation,and narrative time.It is concluded that narratology proves to be applicable to literary translation and the rendition could achieve thematically and aesthetically functional equivalence with the source text.By offering a Chinese version of Caring for Plants with its unique narrative features reserved,the translator hopes to popularize Pyun's work among Chinese readers,and to help the target readers get a better understanding of the cultural meaning as well as the aesthetic significance of Pyun's narrative.
