| English reading literacy is the competence of using English linguistic knowledge to decode and comprehend different types of written English texts with the aid of good reading habits for the purpose of obtaining and using information, developing multiple thinking ability, establishing correct cultural awareness and acquiring literary experience. And it consists of two dimensions: English reading ability and English reading characters. The proposal of English reading literacy in 2015,which meets the requirements of English core literacy in new English Curriculum Standard, opened up the discussion on English reading literacy in the field of English teaching. However, due to the shortage of educational resources, the discussion, research and development of English reading literacy in rural areas are lagging far behind urban areas. In order to enrich the theoretical implication of English reading literacy, highlight the importance of English reading and English learning for students, arouse teachers and students’ emphasis on the development of English reading literacy, put forward constructive suggestions and offer effective reference in the development of English reading literacy for senior high English teachers and students and improve the current situations of English reading literacy in rural areas, the study is to address the following three issues: the features of the development of senior high students’ English reading literacy in rural areas, the correlation between senior high students’ English reading literacy and English learning achievement, and the factors affecting the development of senior high students’ English reading literacy in rural areas. The research is implemented in a paradigm combining qualitative and quantitative data together. And three research methods are employed in the study: an English learning achievement test is applied to measure students’ English reading ability and English learning achievement,a questionnaire of Likert scale is employed to survey students’ English reading characters and an interview is used to explore factors that affect the development of senior high students’ English reading literacy in rural areas. And SPSS 17 and Excel 2013 are employed to analyze data collected in the test and questionnaire and data obtained from interview is analyzed through qualitative means. The results show that the development of senior high students’ English reading literacy in rural areas is generally inadequate and there exists significant difference among students and the development of individual students’ English reading abilities is also imbalanced. And both English reading literacy and its two dimensions are significantly and positively correlated to English learning achievement though English reading characters have greater impact on English learning achievement.Besides, factors that influence senior high students’ development of English reading literacy in rural areas are schools’ short of reading resources and the incapability of building up a beneficial environment for English reading, teachers’ irrational belief in English teaching, parents’ improper belief in education, family’s short of financial support and students’ negative psychological situations and unawareness of self development. |
