Wayne Booth is a famous American literary Critic and rhetorician. He was a prolific author in his life. His academic research focuses on the narrative theory of fiction and rhetoric.About his rhetoric and narrative theories of fiction, there have been rich research results. However, there are still some misunderstandings and gaps in the relationship between the two areas.First of all, some researchers have misunderstood the meaning of "the rhetoric of fiction" and distinguish the rhetoric of the novel from the study of fictional narrative. It is not seen that Booth studied the novel as a form of narrative.Second, researchers generally believe that Booth introduced the research method of rhetoric into the narrative study of fiction. However, when Booth wrote "The Rhetoric of Fiction",his understanding of rhetoric is ambiguous. The rhetoric research of Booth actually arose from the exploration of the narrative theory of the novel, which actually inverts Booth's thought development process.Again, the researchers generally regard Booth's rhetoric and the narrative theory of the novel as two separate fields, but do not see the commonality and connection between the two. This thesis begins with Booth's background and academic experience and excavates the ethical appeal and the source of pluralism in his thoughts.Booth grew up in a closed orthodox Mormon environment. This experience of growth influenced his emphasis on ethical values in the future. The experience of being taught and working at the University of Chicago not only provided him with the philosophical foundations of pluralism, but also provided him with an experience of being the dean of the undergraduate school during the student resistance movement. This made him witness the irrational argumentation environment, and thus deeply realized that The urgent practical needs of rhetoric research.Based on this understanding, the second chapter first combed the rhetoric ideas of Booth.By analyzing the development and changes of the term "rhetoric",Booth's understanding of this issue was elicited and the development of Booth's rhetoric concept.Booth's understanding of rhetoric, from rhetorical skills at the language level, became an essential feature of communication activities. This change has both practical reasons and is a mature manifestation of Booth's rhetoric. This change also prompted Booth to use rhetoric as a learning to improve daily communication. In this regard,he proposed the same rhetoric and listened to rhetoric.Booth considered rhetoric as a synonym for communication. He borrowed from the viewpoint of linguistic existentialism and believed that the "self' as the subject can only exist in communication. Thus,"self is the field of multiple selves" becomes the core proposition of Booth's rhetoric theory. In Booth's rhetoric framework, the third chapter discusses Booth's novel narrative theory.Buss's "Rhetorical Rhetoric" is not a study of the skills of word-writing and sentence-making,but the effect of narrative techniques."Fiction"includes not only novels but "narrative fiction" including epics and short stories. Therefore, the core issue of "Rhetorical Rhetoric" is actually the study of novel narrative.Using Booth's rhetoric theory to discuss the narrative of the novel,we will find that the controversy caused by Booth's concept of "implied author" can be discussed through Booth's concept of "self".The complex narrative communication model produced by the novel provides a model for the study of the rhetoric of human communication activities. The concept of "self' is rooted in the "unity" problem of the Chicago school literary criticism. The theory of rhetoric and listening rhetoric put forward by Booth is reflected in the "co-guidance" process in the ethics of fiction. From the above two chapters,we can see the complex intertwining relationship between Booth's rhetoric and the narrative theory of fiction. This article summarizes this relationship from three aspects:First,Booth's rhetoric exploration originated from the study of poetics. In order to break the bondage of formal poetics to the narrative of the novel,Booth chose to judge the narrative skills based on the reading effect.Effectiveness.He saw this study as "rhetoric." However,in the preliminary exploration,Booth's understanding of rhetoric is still more confusing. The two concepts of "rhetoric as narrative techniques" and "rhetoric as novel" are mixed in his research. This shows that Booth has not yet consciously adopted a rhetorical.gesture and viewed the novel as an exchange activity to conduct research.Second, the narrative study of fiction should be included as part of Booth's entire rhetoric system. The complex narrative exchange model of fiction is an experimental field of rhetoric research.Third, both the narrative and rhetoric ideas of Booth's novels embody three characteristics:emphasis on authors, emphasis on ethical values, and promotion of pluralism.Booth made important contributions to the revival of rhetoric in the 20th century, but his emphasis on the author's concept reflects his conservative side.
