Nowadays, academic study becomes increasingly global. The academic communication between China and Western countries is more and more frequent. Thus, the translation of academic texts appears significant. Rhetoric, the art of persuasion through symbols, plays a crucial role in Western society and its academic circle. Wayne C. Booth, the famous rhetorician and literary critic in contemporary America, accomplished his last work-The Rhetoric of RHETORIC:The Quest for Effective Communication, which is regarded as the "manifesto of the 20th century American rhetoric."This essay is a translation report. The source text is the first chapter of The Rhetoric of RHETORIC. Currently, in China, there is no translation of the whole book and its first chapter. This essay discusses how to do a successful academic translation under the guidance of rhetoric.The point in this essay is that academic translation is a kind of rhetoric. The translation should convey the meaning of the original text and manage to get target readers’ acceptability by practicing rhetoric in word, sentence and quotation rendering. The essay also includes the analysis of skills of academic translation, the summary of this translation and the solutions to some rendering problems.
