A Report On E-C Translation Of Mafeking Road And Other Stories(Chapter 14 To Chapter 17)

This report is based on my translation of Chapter 14 to Chapter 17 from Mafeking Road and other stories,a collection of 21 short stories written by South African writer Herman Charles Bosman.The translation is commissioned by Shanghai 99 Readers,Culture Co.,Ltd and under the charge of my supervisor,Professor Zhao Wei.As a team member,the authoress undertakes the translation of Chapter 14 to Chapter 17.Herman Charles Bosman's collection Mafeking Road and other stories is composed of twenty-one short stories.Through the story teller Oom Schalk Lourens,Bosman provides us a vivid picture of the life of the Boer community who lived in the Groot Marico area in the early years of the 20th century,offering his critical reflections of Boer religion,ethics and history.Nowadays,China has more and more business relations with South Africa.Since this story doesn't have a Chinese version,the translation of the story will help Chinese readers know more about African history and culture.This report includes a brief introduction of the project,the translation preparation and process,a detailed case analysis of the problems encountered during the translation process and the conclusion.Through this translation practice,it is concluded that translators should be faithful to the original theme concerning racial discrimination and Boer lifestyle.They should also preserve stylistic features such as Afrikaan words,the narrative structure,magic style,light satire and a twist in the end so as to acquaint the Chinese readers with its original flavor.Meanwhile,they should regard the naturalness of the Chinese text so as to make the translation more acceptable to the Chinese audience.
