The Second Theme

Lin Zhaohua is one of the most influential drama directors in contemporary China.On the basis of absorbing Chinese and foreign theatre thoughts,he has carried out a large number of creative drama practice,and also summed up the creative drama thought.I discuss his stage drama practice from the perspective of the "second theme"developed by Lin Zhaohua in this paper.First of all,this paper combs the relationship between Lin Zhaohua’s "second theme"and the theatre thoughts of Brecht,Meyerhold and Stanislavsky,and tries to explain the ideological sources of the formation of the "second theme".Then,the author combs and analyzes Lin Zhaohua’s drama practice before the formation of the"second theme",and analyzes the formation and development of the "second theme".Based on these two points,and combined with director Lin Zhaohua’s exposition of the "second theme",the concept of "second theme" is defined.Secondly,in this respect of the stage form of drama practice,this paper divides the play practice under the guidance of the theory of "second theme" into two parts:the theatre which presents the stage play of"second theme" by constructing the obvious"second structure",and the practice which presents the "second theme" by other forms without obvious "second structure".The author takes whether to set up the obvious"second structure" throughout as the distinguishing standard of theatre practice,and makes an in-depth analysis of it,in order to clarify the concrete stage practice under the guidance of the second theme theory."The second theme",as the unique practical director thought of Lin Zhaohua,has become an important guiding ideology for directors to create theatre stage,and it has been integrated into Lin Zhaohua’s later theatre creation.According to his personal feelings and knowledge,Lin Zhaohua formed the "second theme" from original script,by strengthening one of its aspects that could touch him best,and used innovative stage forms to present the "second theme" on the stage.Therefore,the connotation of the "second theme" here includes two aspects:the "second theme" from the original script generated by the director according to his personal feelings and understanding of the script,and the innovation of stage forms for presenting the "second theme".In addition,the " second theme" thought of director further highlights the position of director in theatre practice,and emphasizes that in the concrete stage practice,the expression of director’s thoughts and feelings is crucial in the presentation of theatre stage,which is of great significance to the establishment of director’s main position in theatre field.
