On The Interpreting Strategies Of English Long Sentences

As the world becomes more and more globalized,international conferences with high professionalism are increasingly frequent.In those conferences,English speakers often use long and complex English sentences in their speeches,which considerably intensifies the difficulty in interpreting.Therefore,this paper aims at developing strategies to free the English long sentences from the restrictions of the language while interpreting so as to retain and repressent the sense within the limited time.Under the guidance of the Interpretative Theory of Translation,this paper illustrates four feasible and practical consecutive interpreting strategies of deverbalization so as to achieve the equivalence of sense and effect between the original language and the target language through a case-study of the speech by President Obama at the 67th UN General Assembly.First of all,the thesis reviews the development and the key concepts of Interpretative Theory of Translation.The theory has three core concepts,including translation of sense,translation procedure and cognitive complement.According to the theory,translation of sense is an interpretative process to reach the equivalence of sense between the original language and the target language,instead of finding the linguistic equivalents of the target language.The translation procedure goes through three steps:understanding,deverbalization and representation,forming the famous Triangular Model of Interpreting Process.During the translation procedure,the interpreter must make full use of his or her cognitive knowledge to integrate,analyze,judge,and deduce the original language to complement a thorough understanding of it.The core of the process is deverbalization,which in nature is the production of logic and sense.Deverbalization as the connecting link between understanding and representation transcends the linguistic symbols to help obtain the sense.Meanwhile,deverbalization is not arbitrary and absolute.Therefore,the interpreter is required to make a judgment based on the equivalence of sense and effect.Next,the paper expands on a description of the translation strategies of English long sentences,including the characteristics of English long sentences and their translation difficulties,a summary of the common translation strategies of the English long sentences and the necessity of deverbalization.Finally,citing examples of English long sentences from the speech by President Obama at the 67th UN General Assembly,the paper proposes four effective and practical consecutive interpreting strategies of deverbalization,including dividing the sentence,sorting out the cohesive devices,defining the conversion mode,and moving forward the participial and prepositional phrases.The paper hopes to have certain reference value to researchers on Interpretative Theory of Translation,deverbalization and the interpreting of English long sentences.Besides,it hopes to offer interpreters and translators practical strategies and inspiration on how to handle English long sentences and other complex sentence patterns in the international conferences with-high professionalism.
