A Chinese Translation Practice Report On Conversion Of Word Class Based On Communication At Sea:A Maritime Education Perspective

This practice report is on the basis of a dissertation from University of Tasmania whose content is that for non-English background seafarers,the understanding about maritime English would have influence on the development of International shipping industry.Therefore,the dissertation is based on this topic to do further research.As one of the nautical power all over the world,the acquaintance of global shipping development as well as the latest information is affected directly by our marine literature translation.There are discrepancies between English and Chinese in terms of grammar and morphology attributing to the fact that they belong to different language families.Nouns are frequently used in English,while in Chinese verbs are mostly preferred.Therefore,the unequivalence of parts of speeches appear repeatedly.For the purpose of avoiding literal translation which may cause mismatching of the translated text with the original text and lead to misunderstanding by readers,functional equivalence theory of Nida is introduced as theoretical basis in the process of translation.A variety of part of speech is transformed based on the conversion of word class in order to make the translation faithful to the original English text and conform to the target language,some English word classes are converted into different classes in the translation of this dissertation and thus convenient to understand.In structure,this practice report firstly,introduces the source of the translation.Secondly,the definition of the conversion of word class is determined.Thirdly,examples are used to analyze the conversion of word class,which includes,conversion of nouns,verbs,adjectives,prepositions and adverbs.Finally,the summarization is made.The purpose of this practice report is to investigate the language features of the original text.The significance of the conversion of word class in the whole translation process is explored via the comparison between translation text and original text,which would be helpful for future translation.
